Asking for the Time in Xhosa

The isiXhosa question for asking clock time is the following:

  • Ngubani ixesha?

The answer starts with:

  • Ngu-…

followed by a cardinal number in English in the case of a round hour. If there are minutes, the time is said in expressions adapted from English. Ex.:

  • Yikota pasti wani. (A quarter past one.)

Negative sentences in Albanian

The word used for ‘no’ in isolation (i.e., outside a sentence, not with a verb) is jo. There are two negative adverbs used to make a negative sentence in Shqip (Albanian): nuk and s’. They always come before the verb, nuk as a separate word, s’ as a prefix. Ex.:

  • Jo, ata nuk janë Viktori dhe Aleksandri. (No, they are not Viktor and Aleksandër.)
  • Jo, ata s’janë Viktori dhe Aleksandri. (idem)

Yes/No Questions in Albanian

To make a yes/no question in Shqip (Albanian), put the verb before the subject:

  • Janë ata Aleksandri dhe Eltoni?

Optionally, the interrogative particle ‘a’ can be placed at the beginning of the sentence:

  • A janë ata Aleksandri dhe Eltoni?
